NYFORS releases improved interferometers for fiber end-face inspection, with support for three-dimensional surface topography reconstruction
Press Information January 24, 2012
NYFORS introduces a new generation of cleave meters – the CleaveMeter 2 and CleaveMeter 3D – that simplifies and increases the precision in end-face inspection of cleaved, polished or lensed optical fibers. Included in the platform is support for complete, three-dimensional surface topography reconstruction, allowing for a more comprehensive understanding of the cleaving process.
In addition to providing conventional interferometric end-face inspection functionality, the new cleave meter platform from NYFORS also includes recently developed features that allows the surface topography of the fiber end to be completely reconstructed from the fringe patterns.
This information is presented graphically to the operator as an easy-to-interpret, three-dimensional image of the fiber end. By rotating the image and adjusting scale and contrast, the surface quality and cleave angle at different points can be analyzed in close detail. While this capability is always important to cleave quality analysis, it is especially well suited for analyzing cleaving of fibers with complicated structures such as polarization maintaining fibers and mico-structured fibers.
“NYFORS’ fiber end-face inspection instruments provides research, development and production engineers with a unique and user-friendly tool to help optimize complicated cleaving processes in demanding applications”, said Erik Böttcher, NYFORS vice president. “These capabilities are enabled by proprietary software solutions and technology developed by our engineering team in Stockholm, Sweden, during the last year.”
Software-compensation for fiber holder error allows for high-precision measurements with in-picture presentation of the cleave angle. This enables operator independence and easy process verification in production environments.
The optical system is based on a high-end camera with true megapixel resolution and high sensitivity, yielding excellent image quality at high frame rates and high magnification. High precision optics results in sharp and clear pictures with very little aberration.
Adaptor plates are available for both perpendicular and angled cleave measurements. The mechanical design is compatible with all NYFORS automatic fiber cleavers and accepts the fiber holders used with those machines as well as those of major splicer manufacturers.
